If you are a helmet user, do not be taken aback if a police constable stops you, only to offer you a ‘thank you’ card and a red rose on Monday.

In a bid to encourage the use of helmets, voluntary organisation Margdarshak, the Rotary Club of Pune Central and the Pune police are launching the Roadstar project to encourage the use of helmets in the city.

In a press statement issued on Saturday, Margdarshak, whose brainchild Roadstar is, said the programme was being launched with the help of school students, a few corporates and the Pune police.

Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Vishwas Pandhare will kick-start the campaign at the University of Pune Chowk at 9 am on Monday and it will spread to traffic junctions across the city through the day.

Traffic policemen and Roadstar volunteers will be stationed at all major traffic junctions in the city to felicitate motorcycle riders wearing helmets with ‘thank you’ cards and flowers for being responsible citizens.

According to Margdarshak founder, Ajay Aggarwal, the use of helmets would influence other riders to follow the practice. He said there are 2.7 million vehicles in the city and 200 new driving licences are being issued every day. As many as 800 people die of head injuries caused due to lack of helmets on the city’s roads every year.

Pandhare said, “The use of helmets would reduce fatalities and long-term disabilities of motorcycle riders.”

The institutes involved in the project include Anglo Urdu Boys High School, Anjuman Islam High School, Satav High School (Wagholi) and information technology major, Persistent Systems Ltd.
