The Faraskhana police on Thursday arrested seven brothel keepers and rescued 58 suspected minor girls in raids on 24 brothels.

The raids began at 2 pm and continued till late in the evening in the red light area of the city. Two additional commissioners of police, a deputy commissioner of police, three senior police inspectors, around 100 police constables and 55 women constables conducting the raids.

The police said the rescued minor girls are from different parts of the country and Bangladesh.

Deputy commissioner of police Dnyaneshwar Phadtare (zone I) told DNA, “We had received several complaints that most of the girls were minor.” “A large number of girls were forced into prostitution. We conducted the raids with the help of some NGOs,” he added.

Phadtare said, “After getting the medical reports, the minor girls will be sent back to their native places. However, we understood that this issue has no permanent solution but our effort is to keep rescuing girls from the area.”

Senior police inspector Venkat Gangalwad said, “We have arrested seven brothel keepers. The medical tests of girls will be conducted tomorrow to confirm their age. As of now, we have rescued 58 suspected minor girls. However, we have conducted the raid on 90 flats.”

NGO Rescue Foundation member Kavita Saxena was present during the raids. She said, “This can be called a massive raid. Around 30% of the rescued girls are minors.”

Tejaswi Sevekari said, “Some one must keep a close watch after the girls are rescued. Their rehabilitation must be ensured.”

Married woman sets herself ablaze, dies
A 24-year-old married woman, Sumayya Anjum Salim Shajad Shaikh, allegedly set herself ablaze at her residence on December 27, 2010. She succumbed to burn injuries the next day.

A complaint in this regard was lodged by the victim’s father Jakia Bano Mohammad Younus Shaikh, 50, with the Airport police.

The police have booked Salim Sahjad Alimuddin Shaikh, Ejaj Alimuddin Shaikh, Sadikabbi Alimuddin Shaikh, all are residence of Lohegaon, and Fatimabi Jamiruddin Shaikh and Bablu Samiruddin Shaikh from Amravati.

According to the police, Salim and Sumayya got married in May, 2010. However, the victim’s husband, sister-in-law and brother-in-law were allegedly torturing Sumayya and demanding money from her father. Sumayya’s father had given Rs15,000 to the
suspects in the past.

Autorickshaw driver killed in collision
An autorickshaw driver, Rajkumar Prabhunath, 44, was on Wednesday night killed when his vehicle collided with a car at Model Colony in Shivajinagar.

The police arrested the car driver, Sunil Shrikrushna Pachade, 50, of Ahmednagar.

The police said Prabhunath was travelling on Lakaki Road with a passenger when the car coming from the opposite direction collided with the rickshaw. The passenger, Bhimrao Chandrappa Soni, 53, sustained serious injuries. They were rushed to a private hospital, where Prabhunath was pronounced brought dead. Soni was admitted to the hospital.

Two held for murder of history-sheeter
A history-sheeter Steven Peter Reddy, 28, of Ghorpadigaon on Thursday afternoon succumbed to injuries at the Sassoon General Hospital. He was assaulted by a group of people in Ghorpadi on Wednesday night over a previous enmity. The police held two suspects in the case. George David Lajras, 40, lodged a complaint in this regard.

The police said the victim, who had returned home two months ago after completing his externment period on Tuesday, along with his two friends, had gone to the house of Shivraj Salunke alias Surya and quarrelled with him.

Reddy was attacked with sharp weapons by Shivraj Salunke, Pradeep Ashok Salunke, Umesh Vitthal Salunke, Vijay Besan, Dinu Travdan, Raja Salunke, Akku and Raju, all residents of Ghorpadi.

Senior Police inspector Devidas Patil of Mundhwa police station said, “We arrested two assailants while investigations are on to nab other suspects.”
