Leading industrialists from Pune on Thursday welcomed the anti-corruption crusade launched by social worker Anna Hazare, even as many were stunned by the overwhelming support for the movement from the public.

Speaking to DNA, chairman of Bajaj Auto, Rahul Bajaj, said the kind of support that Hazare is getting from people across the country reflects how people want to bring about a change and curb corruption in the country.

“The overwhelming response from the people proves that they want to root out corruption from the system. Just as Gandhi was able to lead a successful movement against the British, people think Hazare will do the same to eradicate corruption,” he said.

Emphasising that one has to abide by the constitution and democracy, he said, “The Jan Lokpal Bill should be discussed and it should be passed on its merit. Everybody should be consulted before passing the bill. With government agreeing on equal presentation from the civil society, the issue should be discussed openly and a consensus should be reached,” he said.

Kinetic Group chairman Arun Firodia whole-heartedly supported Hazare’s crusade, saying the demand for the stringent Jan Lokpal Bill is completely justified. “The government should act quickly and enact a very strong law so that it is effective and serves everyone’s interest,” he said.

Former Nasscom chief and CEO of Zensar Technologies, Ganesh Natarajan, said corruption is a big problem in the country and any peaceful people’s movement against it should be supported.

“I am waiting to see what turn the whole scenario will take. Even economists and business heads have pointed out that corruption is one of the major problems that are pulling the country back. Anna Hazare’s call to eradicate corruption and introduce the Jan Lokpal Bill is a welcome step,” he said.
