City-based Global Imaging Technologies (GIT) has come up with a handwritten regional language scripts digitisation system that understands handwritten data along with intelligent character recognition (ICR) for
regional languages.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, Arun Bhardwaj, CEO, GIT, said, “The system offers three main facilities- intelligent page management, handwritten text mapping system and character recognition of Indian regional languages. All these features contribute to intelligent page management, which converts data into rows and columns structure for effective utilisation and presentation of data,” he said.

Bhardwaj said the software can even understand handwritten characters by its writing style, brush stroke, size, height and width. It can also compare and add it to the existing dictionary for accurate mapping of digital characters. “It uses intelligent character recognition (ICR) that not only recognises regional language scripts but also creates its own dictionary during the process to minimise errors and to increase accuracy,” he said.

Nasscom has recognised this much needed effort as Global Imaging Technologies is the only company from Pune to bag the NASSCOM Innovation Award in the start-up category.

Out of hundreds of applications received from across the country, for the awards, only eight made it to the list of awardees and GIT was one of them.

“Now, it is available in four Indian languages- Hindi, Marathi, Punjabi and Gujarati, besides English and shall expand support for more Indian and foreign languages in due course of time depending on the requirement,” said Bhardwaj.

Megh Gholap, business head, GIT, said that the system has proved very efficient and has achieved highly accepted results close to over 98% in the pilot projects undertaken.

“The case studies were conducted by using the technology on handwritten birth and death records at Sangli Miraj Kupwad Municipal Corporation. Another case study was carried out at the Navi Mumbai Police Headquarters for digitisation of their service book,” he said. The company said the Science and Technology Park in Pune has also looked at the system and assured GIT that they will promote this in government computerisation projects.
