For the seventh year running, the Bangiya Samsad Nagar Road’s (BSNR) grand Durga Puja event was inaugurated in Vimannagar with the usual fervour and flavour.

To the Bengali community living in the suburbs of Pune, Durga Puja is that time of the year when they reminiscence and recall their cherished childhood memories of pujas held in their native towns and villages with pomp and gaiety.

DNA’s resident editor, Abhay P Vaidya, was the chief guest at the event that showcased the Akal Bodhan, a drama performed by 25 children of the locality who practiced for nearly a month to put up a spectacular performance.

Speaking on the event, Dileep Kumar Nag, president of BSNR’s puja committee said, “This year, the theme of the pandal focuses on saving our environment from all kinds of pollution by planting more trees.”

The puja not only brings the Bengali community of the area together but also attracts a large crowd from the locality and nearby areas.

In the Ramayana, Lord Ram went to Lanka to rescue his abducted wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana, the king of demons. Before starting the battle with Ravana, Ram wanted the blessings of Goddess Durga. He came to know that the goddess would be pleased only if she is worshipped with one hundred blue lotuses. Ram, after travelling the whole world, could gather only 99 of them.

He finally decided to offer one of his eyes, which resembled a blue lotus. Durga was pleased with the devotion of Ram and appeared before him and blessed him. The battle started on ‘Saptami’ (7th day) and Ravana was finally killed on ‘Sandhikshan’ — the crossover period between Ashtami (8th day) and Navami (9th day). Ravana was cremated on Dashami (10th day).

Since the period of this worship was different from the conventional period (during the spring - ‘Basanta’), this puja is also known as Akal-Bodhan or worship (Bodhan) in an unconventional time (Akal).
