Doctors at Ruby Hall Clinic have successfully carried out a rare and difficult oncosurgery on an 18-year-old student, Ketan Shedage, for free.

Ketan, a student of standard XII at Wakad-based Shahu College, underwent the operation on July 23 after he had developed chondrosarcoma affecting his sternum and chest wall.

Chondrosarcoma is considered to be a dreaded form of cancer, a rare one. Due to late detection, the patients are not aware of the growing tumour until there is a noticeable lump or pain.

The two surgeons of the hospital, Drs Saurabh Mohite and Mahesh Sinnarkar, told reporters that it was a difficult case as the tumour was extending into the neck, very close to the windpipe and into the chest, infiltrating the pericardium (covering of the heart).

Ketan’s brother Chetan said that the former had already undergone an operation in October last year. However, symptoms of the disease reappeared, when they referred the case to Ruby Hall Clinic.

“We were given an estimate of Rs3.5 lakh for the operation. But due to our poor financial condition, we couldn’t afford it. We are grateful to Ruby Hall Clinic, which waived all surgery charges,” said Chetan.

Ketan was admitted to the hospital on July 20 following which his operation took place. He was discharged within a week. The doctors informed that in such cases, the chance of the patient dying during the operation is 25%.

“It was very brave on the patient’s part to cooperate with us,” Mohite said. According to the doctors, the patient has recovered, but requires to go through radiotherapy sessions.

Chairman of the cancer centre, Dr Ashok Bhanage, said that difficult cases are discussed in the tumour board in the Ruby Hall Clinic and the treatment is planned as per consensus.
