Pune cops bust chain-snatching gang, arrest 4

The 5-member gang was involved in 12 chain snatchings, two robberies, one vehicle theft and burglary case.

The Kothrud police busted a chain-snatching gang with the arrest of four persons. The 5-member gang was involved in 12 chain snatchings, two robberies, one vehicle theft and burglary case, the police said, adding that goods valued at Rs6.91 lakh was recovered from them.

One of the suspects of the gang that used to threaten the victim with a fake pistol and commit the crime is at large.

Sunil Laxman Gavli (24) of Dhankavdi, Angad Mahadev Gavli (23) of Kothrud, Kumar Vilas Bhoj (19) of Warje-Malwadi and Pintya alais Rohidas Laxman Gupte (27) of Dhayrigaon used to sell the stolen chains to Karvenagar-based jeweller Atul Shane through Sachin Kambale.

Acting on a tip-off received by police naik Raju Borde and constable Baba Dangade, a team led by sub-inspector Bhanudas Shinde of the detection branch laid a trap and nabbed the suspects while they were preparing for dacoity at Shindewasti in Kothrud on January 5.

Kothrud police station incharge and senior inspector, Chandrakant Ghodke said, “The gang was active for past two months. They had hired a room in Dhayri to lodge, and used to snatch chains at night.

The suspects had also robbed a provision store owner of Rs20,000 and one Brijeshkumar Yadav of Rs12,000 near State Bank of India office in Anandnagar in Kothrud. They targeted areas located on the outskirts of the city that provided easy escape routes. All the members have met each other while serving jail terms and later formed the gang. Gupte, despite being externed, was committing the offence in city.”

Two motorcycles, 300gm gold ornaments, gas cylinder, gas stove, lighter in the shape of revolver, one countrymade pistol, CD player and other goods valued at Rs6.91 lakh were recovered.
