The Warje Malwadi police arrested an autorickshaw driver, Rajesh Chandrakant Warang (49), for allegedly attacking his in-laws and wife with a chopper after she refused to give him money for liquor at Atulnagar, in Warje Malwadi area, on Sunday afternoon.

Rajesh tried to end his life by stabbing himself on the neck, but survived. The injured victims have been identified as Warang’s father-in-law, Varendra Nilkantha Mathadhikari (67); mother-in-law Sulbha Varendra Mathadhikari (57); brother-in-law Ravindra Varendra Mathadhikari; and wife Neha Rajesh Warang (34).

A complaint in this regard was lodged by Rajesh’s sister-in-law, Sayali Ravindra Mathadhikari, at the Warje Malwadi
police station.

The police said Rajesh and Neha married 10 years ago and lived with their son and daughter in Warje Malwadi. Rajesh drove autorickshaws while Neha worked with a private firm as a clerk. She is a commerce graduate.

Later, Rajesh became addicted to liquor and used to beat Neha when she refused to give him money for liquor. Neha had lodged a complaint at Warje Malwadi police station in the past and the police gave him a warning.

Senior police inspector Sunil Darekar of Warje Malwadi police station said, “Finally, Neha shifted to her parents’ house two months ago and was not giving money to Rajesh. He used to visit Neha’s parents’ house and abuse them.”

Rajesh was known in the housing society for his behaviour. As a result, the security guards did not allow him to enter the society premises.

Darekar said, “On Sunday afternoon, most of the society residents were attending a spiritual programme on the society premises. Rajesh came with a chopper and went to the 10th floor of the building. He entered the flat and attacked his wife and in-laws with a chopper.”

Rajesh’s mother-in-law lost two fingers of her left hand, while other victims sustained injuries on their hands and other parts of the body. Darekar said, “After the attack, Rajesh went down by the lift and stabbed himself  on the neck with the chopper, but didn’t get serious injuries.”
