A 42-year-old pathology lab technician was arrested by officers of the Shivaji Nagar police station on Wednesday for allegedly raping his teenage daughter and confining her and his wife in a room in his house for five days.

The suspect, Mohammad Chaudhary, runs a pathology laboratory in Shivaji Nagar, Govandi. He was arrested after his wife and daughter approached the police and filed a complaint against him.
Senior inspector BS Jodgudari said, “The incident took place on January 21 when Reshma [name changed], 14, was alone at home while her mother was at the pathology clinic and her younger brothers had gone to school.”

According to Jodgudari, Reshma told the police that her father raped and assaulted her and threatened her with “dire consequences” if she told her mother or anyone else. In the evening, when Chaudhary’s wife returned home, she saw Reshma crying and asked what had happened. The daughter then told her about the attack.

When Chaudhary’s wife questioned him about his action, the technician allegedly beat her and their daughter up and locked them together in a room in the house for five days. During this period, they were not allowed to communicate with anyone inside or outside the house. Reshma, a student of Std VIII, was also not allowed to go to school.

Assistant commissioner of police (Tilak Nagar division) AA Baig said Reshma’s mother said in her statement that her husband raped the girl repeatedly even when they were confined at home.
After five days, the man relented and freed his wife and daughter from confinement but warned them not to leave the house or talk about the incident to anyone. When he had gone to the lab, however, the duo ignored his threats and went to the Shivaji Nagar police station to lodge a complaint.

“They had no option but to approach us,” Baig said. “The medical report of the victim has confirmed rape and we arrested the suspect on Wednesday evening from near his residence.”

Police said Chaudhary already has a criminal record. Last year he was arrested on a charge of killing a man named Salim Carromvala, whom he suspected of having an affair with his second wife. But Chaudhary was released three months ago after the witness in the case turned hostile. His second wife now lives in her maternal home.

Chaudhary has been booked for rape, assault, and criminal intimidation. A court ordered that he be kept in police custody till February 2.
