Professionals Party of India bats for electoral reforms

The party has asked the election commission to implement the same for the forthcoming general elections of 2014.

The Professionals Party of India (PPI) has met a formal presentation to the Election Commission of India (EC) asking for a series of electoral reforms in the system. The party has asked the commission to implement the same for the forthcoming general elections of 2014.

The 18-point agenda set up by the party, talks of reforms in all respects of the polls. N Raja, a member of the PPI, while talking to media persons said that the party has asked for usage of electorate friendly voter list and use of contemporary technology for electioneering. Also, they have asked for introduction of alphabet wise electoral rolls for the benefit of the people.

A major recommendation of the party was that the instead of the present one month model code of conduct, the same be promulgated six months prior to the polls. “This would help the electorate get to know the candidates properly and also provide a level playing field for all candidates,’’ he said.

Other than disqualification of criminals and limiting the upper age of Parliamentarians at 65 years, the party claims would help in cleansing the system and allow younger people to enter Parliament.

“We have suggested that candidates should be resident of the constituency for a minimum of 5 years before standing for polls, to ensure people with proper knowledge of the constituency are elected to Parliament,’’ he said.

Also the PPI, has asked for immediate implementation of the None of the Above (NOTA) option in the electronic voting machines (EVM)s.

“This option would not only increase the voting percentage but also would ensure that political parties would be field better and clean candidates for the polls,’’ he said.

Raja said that the proposals of the party were well received by the commission.
