After DNA carried a report highlighting ‘illegal’ appointments in the Food and Drug Administration (FAD), speaker of the Upper House on Wednesday asked the General Administration Department (GAD) to look into the matter.

Raising the issue during the ongoing monsoon session, Nationalist Congress Party MLC Jayawant Jadhav said there were many government departments where people had got jobs after submitting bogus documents.

Earlier this week, Society for Civil Rights had written a letter to the chief minister and chief secretary complaining about illegal appointments in the FDA.

Jadhav said there were many departments such as dairy development, public health department and medical education department where appointments have been made without checking candidates’ qualifications.

“Unfortunately, neither the state government nor the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) seems to have taken this issue seriously. If the officers of the level of food inspectors are without adequate qualification, how will they stop adulteration?” asked Jadhav.

“There are cases where organisations have gone up to the governor and complained. However, no action seems to have been taken against it,” said Jadhav.

He also raised questions about recruitments by the MPSC. “They ask candidates to fill up forms in which vital details such as qualifications are asked. They simply believe in what the candidate has written and then do not scrutinise the documents when hiring the person. This system has to be changed. The MPSC has repeatedly refuted allegations of illegal hiring."

"However, they should think of appointing a third-party independent auditor who can manually verify all documents before giving the candidates a chance to seat for written test,” said Jadhav.

“The speaker of the Upper House has taken note of the issue and has asked the General Administration Department (GAD) to order a probe into the matter,” concluded Jadhav.
