Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Sunday said that there is no question of his tendering resignation over the Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) controversy.

The controversy over appointment of tainted bureaucrat PJ Thomas as CVC appears to have shifted from the Centre to the state as opposition parties demanded Chavan to resign owing moral responsibility.

The BJP, Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) jointly took the decision to boycott the customary tea party by the chief minister on the eve of the budget session from Monday.

The leader of the opposition Eknath Khadse signalled that the next six weeks of the session will be stormy as they are not going to dilute their attack on the ruling Congress and NCP.

But Chavan has been firm: “I am not going to resign,” he said. “I have nothing further to state on the CVC issue. Whatever correspondence happened, relates to the Centre and not the state.”

The CVC issue has been debated in the parliament and answers to queries from the opposition were answered by prime minister Manmohan Singh.

The BJP which plans to steal the thunder in the coming session has set the stage by holding a massive rally titled ‘Mafia raj hatao’ on Monday in Mumbai.

The MNS on the other hand wanted to assert itself by moving the vote of no confidence motion against Chavan. However, it was ruled out by Shiv Sena. Instead, Sena wants to keep the government on tenterhooks by demanding scrapping of the Jaitapur nuclear plant and by raking up the farmers’ issue.

Commenting on these moves by the opposition, Chavan said, “Boycott of tea parties has become a trend. We are willing to debate all issues raised by the opposition on the floor of the assembly. We are open to discussions on all the issues and willing to provide answers to them.”

The state budget will be presented on March 23. It will be Ajit Pawar’s first budget after he took the charge as finance minister last November.

High on the government agenda are the list of 18 bills including the 50% reservation of women in local self government bodies.

However, the long-pending controversial bill to combat the evils of blind faith and black magic (andha shraddha nirmulan) has not been listed.

“The tardy probe in Adarsh housing scam and murder of additional collector Yashwant Sonawane by the oil mafia will be raised in the session,” said Khadse.

The BJP plans to highlight the Rs50,000-crore land deals underway in the government to put the ruling parties on the back-foot. A public interest litigation relating to the deals has already been filed by BJP general secretary Kirit Somaiyya.
