Pre-poll swoop nets illegal arms in Pune

The crime branch (unit IV) of the city police seized 10 country-made pistols and 80 live cartridges from two members of the Sharad Mohol gang in Rahu village, near Daund, on Thursday.

Ahead of the ensuing election to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the crime branch (unit IV) of the city police seized 10 country-made pistols and 80 live cartridges from two members of the Sharad Mohol gang in Rahu village, near Daund, on Thursday. 

It was a joint venture executed by the anti-organised crime cell (north region) and crime branch unit IV team led by inspector Subhash Kutwal and 10 others. 

The suspects have been identified as Ajay Tukaram Kadu, 23, a resident of Kalewadi, and Anil Khole, 25, of Wadgaon Budruk. 

According to the police, “Our constable, Dinesh Shinde, got a tip-off that Khole was in possession of illegal firearms in  the village.  We zeroed in on him and recovered a pistol. During interrogation, he revealed the name of his accomplice, hiding in Rahu village, who was in possession of nine revolvers, along with 80 live cartridges.” 
A senior officer told DNA, “Kadu has four cases registered against him, including those of murder, extortion and under the Arms Act. Both are wanted in the kidnapping of Dasve village sarpanch and extortion cases involving the Kishore Marne gang.”
