Murmurs of protest have started in the Congress camp against the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) decision to implement the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) on 27 roads of the city.

The party is ruling in the civic body, along with its alliance partner the NCP.

The deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap, a Congressman, on Wednesday expressed his displeasure about the decision to implement the scheme. “There will be more mishaps and chaos on city roads, especially on Sinhagad Road if the BRTS is implemented,” he said.

Ironically, the Congress had introduced the BRTS in the city in 2007 when it was in power in the PMC. A pilot project was executed between Hadapsar and Katraj, a stretch of 13km.

However, the project is still plagued by problems even after three years. Its implementation has been far from satisfactory.

The standing committee of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Tuesday approved the BRTS on 27 roads including, Sinhagad Road.

Some corporators of the ruling combine issued a press statement on Wednesday expressing their reservation about the scheme on Sinhagad Road.

“The road is too narrow for starting the scheme. It would not be prudent to implement the scheme on narrow roads of the city,” they pointed out.

Jagtap argued that the width of Sinhagad Road is too narrow at many places. “For example, the stretch near Anandnagar is so narrow that mishaps are bound to happen if the BRT is implemented,” he said, adding that Sinhagad Road has no crossings for pedestrians.

Jagtap said the corporators are not opposed to the scheme. But it should be implemented on roads that are wide enough. “We feel that rather than concentrating on the BRTS scheme, the civic body should buy more buses to overcome the problems of the commuters,” the deputy mayor said.
