The family of the 15-year-old girl from Powai who was allegedly raped by four people, including senior police inspector Arun Borude, has been provided police security.

Sunil Kajrolkar, the social worker who blew the lid off the case, said: “On Saturday, the Powai police deployed two constables near the victim’s house in the Filterpada locality to see that the family does not face any threat or danger from the accused or their accomplices.”

“Two of the four wanted accused in this case are still at large. Besides Borude, the other absconding accused is suspected to be an influential person. It is feared that he could cause some problem for the family or try to threaten its members. Providing security to the family will help them feel secured and not change their statements when the case comes up for hearing.”

The victim’s sister who works for a catering agency returns home late at night.

“Last week, when Reshma (name changed), the victim’s sister, was returning home after work, a girl sat beside her on the bus. She struck a conversation with her and said she did not have money to buy a ticket. When Reshma got off the bus, the girl followed her home,” said the victim’s brother-in-law.

“Reshma got help from her neighbours and informed the police. The police took away the girl. The girl seemed to be mentally unstable, but following this incident, Reshma and her siblings have been very scared.”

The victim’s mother has claimed that unidentified people come to their residence and ask for Shantabai Gaikwad’s address. It was Gaikwad who lured the victim and pushed her into flesh trade.

A few days ago, the victim’s mother and brother were walking towards home when they heard someone calling out their names. But when they looked back to check, they could not see anyone.

“Such incidents have been happening and this has created a fear in our mind. We fear that someone may try to harm us as the details about the accused involved in the case have been revealed. The accused are influential and powerful people,” said Mehrunisa (name changed), the victim’s elder sister.

The rape case was discussed in the ongoing winter session of the state assembly at Nagpur. Senior opposition leaders wanted to know why Borude has not been nabbed till now.
