Manik Debnath, father of the young Wipro Technology software engineer, Mandira, who died after falling from her friend’s fifth floor balcony on March 19, has demanded that his daughter’s death be registered as a case of murder by the Pune police.

Debnath told DNA that although he wanted to file a case of murder against Mandira’s friend Rinosh Chacko, the police were not assisting him and making him run from pillar to post.

Senior inspector Deepak Sawant of Yerawada police station said two different FIRs have been registered against Chacko and Mandira. One case has been filed by Chacko’s wife Sudeshna while another has been filed by the police under the relevant section of the Indian Penal Code for endangering the life of a woman. “We have informed Debnath that we cannot lodge his case,’’ Sawant said.

Mandira was critically injured on March 19 when she fell from the fifth floor balcony in a residential complex in Kharadi while trying to climb down to the fourth floor by using a bed sheet. She on March 26 while undergoing treatment at a city hospital.

According to the police, Chacko was trying to help Mandira to climb down to the fourth floor after his wife Sudeshna made an unexpected arrival at the apartment. Mandira was trying to climb down with the help of a bed sheet tied to a water pipe when suddenly her hands slipped and she fell.

Sudeshna, who was estranged from her husband, was visiting her house to collect her belongings and return to Kolkata. She approached the police when Chacko did not open the door after repeated calls for nearly two hours.

Apparently gripped by panic, Chacko allegedly took the risk of lowering his friend from the fifth floor to hide her presence from his wife. Sudeshna lodged an FIR with the Yerawada police station stating that she was being harassed by Chacko for dowry and alleged that he had an extramarital affair.

A former defence employee settled in Chandigarh, Debnath said his daughter had become a scapegoat in the fight between the Chacko couple. “She had resigned from the company and was planning to come to stay with us as we were searching for a boy for her and preparing for her marriage. Sudeshna and Chacko were working in the same company and Sudeshna was a very good friend of Mandira as both were Bengalis,’’ he said.

Debnath said he could not digest the story that Mandira was trying to climb down from the fifth floor. “My daughter didn’t have the athletic build to be able to climb down from the first floor, leave alone fifth floor,’’ he said.

He said that after the tragic incident, Sudeshna has not been taking their calls and they have not been able to get in touch with Chacko. According to the grieving father, the police was not cooperating with him in his effort to know the facts of the case.

He said his daughter’s golden pendant of Ganesha which was one of their last memories was missing. “We haven’t recovered her third handset as we even checked her cellphones. My fight will continue till I am able to punish Chacko and prove that my daughter is innocent,’’ he said.

Advocate Mohanrao Dongre said the family is planning to lodge a private murder case in the court.
