More than a million passengers in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad areas suffered hardships on Thursday as the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) union strike left the entire fleet of transport utility off the roads.

The transport utility suffered a loss of about Rs1.15crore, the average income it earns on Thursdays.

PMPML labour union leaders claimed that the one-day strike was a total success. The action committee of all six labour unions of PMPML had given a call for a day’s strike to press their demand for implementation of the 6th Pay Commission’s recommendations.

PMP Kamgar Sangh (Intuc) general secretary, AN Anpur, told DNA on Thursday that all 10,000 workers of the transport utility stayed off work. He said the management was responsible for the strike. Workers expressed anger about not getting salary hike despite rise in prices. The strike was peaceful with workers not holding any meeting or rally.

Anpur said unions would take a decision about the proposal to go on an indefinite strike from February 21 if the token strike does not serve its purpose. PMPML PRO, DA Pardeshi, told DNA that no untoward incident was reported during the strike and the bus service will be normal by Friday morning.

Shiv Sena provided free transportation for passengers on Satara Road, Sinhagad Road, Ahmednagar Road, Karve Road and Solapur Road.

The party’s group leader in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Sham Deshpande, said about 800 rickshaws and 80 buses provided free service to passengers. Party’s activists, including four deputy chiefs of the city and 21 divisional chiefs, participated in the drive to provide service to passengers.

Meanwhile, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan (PMP) Pravasi Manch, an association of PMPML passengers, said state government and Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad municipal corporations were also responsible for the strike. The NGO’s president, Jugal Rathi, and convenor, Vivek Velankar, said lakhs of commuters — especially students, employees, vendors, women and elders — suffered severe hardship due to the strike.
