PMC goes public with top property tax defaulters

Following pressure from civic activists to publish names of property tax defaulters, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has disclosed on its website, names of defaulters and the amount due from them.

Civic activist Vishwas Sahastrabuddhe by using Right to Information Act, 2005, had highlighted that the property tax dues of PMC are of more than Rs420 crore and the civic body was not taking effective steps to recover them. Activists of Pune Nagari Sanghatana (PNS) Vivek Velankar, Sahastrabuddhe and others had demanded that the civic body make public information about property tax defaulters.

The PMC has now published detailed information about property tax dues on its website — www.punecorporation.org. It has provided details of defaulters like property account number, ward name, name of the defaulter, address, property details, whether any court case is pending and the due amount.

The civic body has provided information in different categories. Hence, one can know information about top 10 property tax dues in the entire jurisdiction of PMC on the webpage http://www.punecorporation.org/pmcwebn/OnlineDueDetails18102011/defaulters_search.aspx.

The civic body has provided information of top 10, 25 and 50 defaulters. It has provided information according to areas like Aundh, Baner, Bibvewadi, Dhole Patil Road, Ghole Road, Ahmednagar Road, Sahakarnagar and Tilak Road.

The PMC has said the list of property tax defaulters is as per its records. Those who have already paid the property tax or have any dispute, should contact the tax department along with tax receipts issued by the civic body.

Velankar told DNA that the PMC has taken a welcome step to ensure transparency and it would help in recovering property tax dues. The civic body should also start a campaign to recover dues, he added.
