Ruling and opposition corporators of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) are opposing the move to set up the statue park.

The standing committee members avoided discussing the issue during its meeting on Tuesday on the plea that municipal commissioner Ashish Sharma was not present in the meeting and there was no any clear information about
the project.

The standing committee member and Nationalist Congress Party corporator Tanaji Khade told reporters that the municipal elections are around the corner and the project has created a controversy.

“We want to avoid any kind of controversy. The civic administration also did not clarify whether it would remove all statues in Pimpri-Chinchwad and relocate them to the park. There were a few statues in Bhakti-Shakti Park at Nigdi where the civic administration had spent a large amount of money. It was pointless to remove such stature from these places,’’ he said.

Republican Party of India (RPI) corporator from Dapodi Chandrakanta Sonkamble also opposed the statue park project.

She said, “There are certain statues which are identified with a particular area. Hence, it is meaningless to remove them from these places.’’

BJP corporator Bhima Bobade said the project should be undertaken in a transparent manner and proper tenders should be floated for the project.

Reacting to the allegations, mayor Yogesh Behl said, “Only the statues which hindered the smooth flow of traffic will be removed after the approval from a proper authority and local residents. The civic administration will categorise the statues like national heroes, freedom fighters, political leaders and a biography will also be displayed besides each statue. A separate hall will be also constructed on the campus of park so that people can organise programmes on birth and death anniversaries of these personalities.’’

Behl also argued that the park would attract tourists. “The onus would be on the civic administration to look after the statues. There are several organisations that have welcomed the initiative. I feel there should be no
opposition to the project,’’ he said.
