Officials at the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) are working towards implementing a proposal to print mark sheets of SSC and HSC students with their photographs from the year 2012.

So far, students only get their names and seat numbers printed on board exam mark sheets. This move is meant to make mark sheets tamper-proof and increase their authenticity.

The state education board’s Chairperson Ujjwaladevi Patil confirmed to DNA that her team was working on this proposal and had achieved a fair amount of success.

“Many people had demanded that this move should be initiated as photographs of students printed on mark sheets will help in cross verification and it would be difficult to duplicate or forge such mark sheets. Our team of experts studied this proposal and has come up with valuable inputs. We are confident that if this proposal is to be implemented, we can issue original mark sheets; but the problem will come in duplicate mark sheets,” she said.

Patil said her team pointed out that since hall tickets are issued with photos of students pasted onto them, a similar exercise could be done for mark sheets as well.

Patil, however, raised some doubts.

“For some reason, if there are re-exams or students need duplicate mark sheets, they can request for duplicate mark sheets. Currently, we don’t have any software system to store soft copies of these photos. That’s why our experts are working to resolve this issue if the proposal has to see the light of day,” she explained.

Board officials say many steps have been taken in the past few years to ensure that mark sheets are made tamper-proof.

“There have been 12 minor changes in the mark sheets to ensure that they are tamper-proof. Even answer sheets for SSC exams are using the optical mark reading system which means that every paper is pre-printed with candidate details and every page is marked.”
