PCMC gets cold feet on Empire Estate flyover

The standing committee of the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has directed the civic administration to submit a revised proposal of granting work order for the Empire Estate flyover project, which is estimated to cost Rs99 crore.

The standing committee opposed the project on the grounds that spending of such a huge amount may have an adverse impact on the civic exchequer in the run-up to the municipal elections.

Standing committee members, who had a meeting with chief minister Prithviraj Chavan in Mumbai on Thursday, said the cost of the project is huge and is likely to escalate in the future.

The project had received the no objection certificate (NOC) from the World Bank (WB) and railway
authorities.

After completing the process of inviting bids for the project, PCMC commissioner Ashish Sharma had tabled the proposal in front of the standing committee to award the work to Gaben India Ltd.

However, after going through a long process, the standing committee members now feel that the cost of the project is unsustainable.
