Ubaid Ishrat Shaikh alias Rehman, the prime suspect and mastermind of the firing incident in Pakmodia Street last week, has reportedly fled to Nepal along with his pregnant wife.

According to the central intelligence agency which has been tracking Ubaid’s movements, Ubaid crossed into Nepal from Uttar Pradesh two days after the incident. Fugitive Dawood Ibrahim’s brother Iqbal Kaskar’s driver Arif Sayed was shot dead in the incident.

Teams from the Mumbai crime branch and Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) were trailing Ubaid immediately after the firing incident; however, they now have reached a dead-end. “The Rajan gang has a strong base in Nepal and it is possible that Ubaid may hide there for sometime before moving to some South-East Asian country where Rajan is believed to be hiding,” a Mumbai police officer said.

Cops came to know about Ubaid’s hand within an hour of the firing incident. “His location was tracked to Nerul, where he resides, and a team of police officers rushed there to catch him. But, Ubaid must have seen the news on television and figured out about the arrest of two shooters. Sensing danger, he fled along with his wife, mother and uncle,” the officer said.

A central intelligence officer said that after Nerul, Ubaid’s location was traced in Pune. But before the police teams could reach there, he fled from there as well. “It would now be difficult to track down Ubaid as no one knows where he will go from Nepal,” the officer added.
