Not just taxis, even auto rickshaws will soon be available for commuting on a prepaid basis outside major railway termini.

Recently, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) cleared a proposal to start prepaid auto rickshaw services for outstation passengers who alight at two of the city’s busiest termini — Bandra and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) in Kurla — and want to commute within the metropolitan city.

State transport commissioner Dilip Jadhav has confirmed the development. “The proposal has been cleared. The RTOs (regional transport offices) concerned have to now arrange for the space in or near railway premises from where the scheme can be run and collaborate with the unions to ensure that drivers respond favourably to the scheme,” he said.

A senior official from the western RTO in Andheri said, “Proposal to start prepaid auto rickshaw services has been cleared by the MMRTA in a recent meeting.

Once we receive a written notice with all the concerned details in the coming days, we will start making arrangements to initiate the services outside Bandra railway terminus.”

Contradicting reports, he said, no such services had been demanded or approved outside the domestic airport.
