The Santa Cruz police have launched a manhunt for three unidentified accused who masqueraded as cops and conned a senior-citizen of valuables worth Rs3 lakh. This is the tenth such incident in the Khar-Santa Cruz belt in the past one month.

Similar incidents came to light earlier this month when DNA reported how fake cops were on the prowl and, in retaliation, how motorists in Thane had started demanding identification proof of traffic cops before handing over their documents for checking at naka-bandis.

According to police records, the latest incident took place on Tuesday morning when Paramjit Kaur, a 65-year-old Santa Cruz resident was on her way to visit his son’s home in Andheri.

The victim in her complaint said that while she was waiting for an auto rickshaw near Union Bank at SV Road in Santa Cruz, two men dressed as traffic police personnel approached her saying that their senior officer sitting inside a white Gypsy wanted to see her.

When she went there, she was told that someone has been stabbed two lanes away and therefore she would have to remove her ornaments and give it to them for safekeeping.

“When my mother refused, they (the accused) shouted at her for not listening to cops,” adds Charanjeet Singh, Kaur’s son. In the meantime, a man who was possibly their accomplice was asked to hand over his gold chain in front of her, which he readily did.

“The accused then rubbed some oil on the victim’s wrists and removed her bangles. They fled from the spot immediately before the victim could realise what was happening,” said a relative of the victim.

“Further investigation is on in the case. We will catch the culprits soon,” said senior police inspector M Chaudharie of Santa Cruz police station.

Senior officials from the police department say that looting of the public by fake cops have become a menace in recent years as hundreds of such cases are reported every year across the city.

The cops have now started putting up posters and banners all over the city to raise public awareness. Efforts are also being made to educate the public about the issue during police-citizens meetings.
