After the Shiv Sena and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), the state BJP unit has decided to woo the Marathi manoos. From learning adequate Marathi to get a driving licence, programmes on Cartoon Network, Discovery and Animal Planet, to announcements at airports and railway stations and space for Marathi books stalls, the BJP promises them all if voted to power in the assembly polls.

State BJP president Nitin Gadkari said that the party would set up a department headed by a cabinet minister to preserve and encourage the growth of Marathi. He was speaking at the release of the Maharashtra Vision 2020, a charter of commitments, in Pune on Sunday. The document has an entire chapter devoted to Marathi language and culture.

The party plans to make learning of Marathi mandatory for those seeking a driving licence in the state. “Drivers, including taximen or automen can easily give a Marathi test before seeking the licence. A small booklet on daily use of Marathi would be printed so that there will be no hurdles in conducting such a test. We need to teach Marathi to those who migrate to Maharashtra for employment. A small course in the language has to be completed before seeking a driving licence,” he said.

The leader said a joint BJP-Shiv Sena vachan nama, different from this vision document, would be released soon. “We have a scheme to make Marathi literature available on the Internet free. A unicode (which allows computers to represent text expressed in the writing systems) will be installed so that Marathi can be easily used on the computer and to access material from the Net,” he said.
