Noted criminal lawyer, Vijayrao Abasaheb Mohite, passed away early on Tuesday morning at King Edward Memorial Hospital. He was 89 years old.
Noted criminal lawyer, Vijayrao Abasaheb Mohite, passed away early on Tuesday morning at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital. He was 89 years old and is survived by his wife, Jayashree and three daughters: Vandana Chavan, Revati Dere and Vinita Kamte.
He was ailing for a long time. As a practising lawyer, Mohite was appointed special public prosecutor in about 15 sensational cases in the state and won all of them. Some of them are the Geeta Gandhi murder case in Nagpur and Bhaskar Wagh case in Dhule.
He was also special public prosecutor in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case, but had to bow out due to a small accident.
Born on February 27, 1932, Mohite did his education from Fergusson College and ILS Law College. He started practice in 1957 as a junior advocate under SG Nirgudkar for two years.
According to his last wish, his mortal remains were kept in his chamber in the Pune district court to enable people to pay tribute.
He worked as a professor in ILS Law College for 15 years and also delivered lectures in Symbiosis Law College and Shahu Law College.
He was dean of the law faculty at the University of Pune (UoP) and chairman of the board of studies in law in UoP for three years.
He was elected thrice to the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa and was also elected unopposed chairman of the state bar. He is known for starting Maharashtra Advocates’ Welfare Fund.
He also penned a book, Law of Cruelty, Abatement of Suicide, in 1993 by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa.
His daughter, Vandana Chavan, is a former mayor of Pune and ex-member of the legislative council. His second daughter, Revati Dere, is practising in the Bombay high court; and his third daughter, Vinita Kamte, is the widow of martyr Ashok Kamte.
