More than getting an opportunity to contest the civic polls, the idea of meeting Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray seems to have attracted a few functionaries to apply for the party examination to identity candidates.

"Ever since saheb announced the test, people have shown great interest towards appearing for the same,” said a party functionary entrusted with responsibility of circulating and collecting the forms.

“There is no doubt most aspirants want to bag the party's official candidature. But, there are a few who have bought application forms, costing Rs1,000 each, hoping they will get an opportunity to interact with the party chief during the interview round after clearing the written examination,” he added.

The MNS will hold the exam on December 4, and applications for the examinations will be accepted until Thursday evening.

While the activist attributed the enthusiasm of applicants to Thackeray's growing stature in state politics, the 'willingness to meet' the leader among activists was experienced first during the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) polls held in October 2010, he said.

"Though there were no exams planned in the run-up to the KDMC elections, a few activists had held an interview round saying they just wanted to greet him. When saheb questioned what if the party did not offer them tickets, they said meeting him was enough," said a functionary of the party's Mankhurd unit.

MNS senior leaders feel that holding an exam to get candidates has helped bring those with apathy for politics closer to the system.

“When Thackeray announced organising such exam, people were eager to know what it would be about and how it would be conducted. Besides, meeting the leader is always on their minds," said Shirish Parkar, MNS general secretary and spokesperson.
