The scene at city colleges as students went to collect their HSC mark sheets on Monday was far removed from the usual anxiety and excitement surrounding HSC results. Neither did crowds gather outside colleges nor were there long queues to collect mark sheets. The reason? With the HSC results being declared online almost two weeks ago, students already knew how they had fared.

There were not many celebratory scenes on college campuses. Though most institutes started handing out mark sheets by afternoon, students arrived later. “There was little excitement this year, as students were not waiting to find out their marks. It was business as usual in the college. We will felicitate the high scorers later,” said Dr Frazer Mascarenhas, principal, St Xavier’s College.

In fact, in some colleges, some mark sheets are yet to be handed out. The principal of a Malad college said: “Most of our students didn’t even turn up to pick up their mark sheets. We have many mark sheets left to be given out. Students do not seem interested in their mark sheets.”

Prachi Sathaye, a student, said: “Mark sheets are now only a formality. There was a time when they were documents almost revered by students. Now with marks available online in advance, we no longer wait in excitement to go to college and see how we have fared.”

However, there was a beeline of students outside stationary shops in the vicinity of their respective colleges to get their mark sheets photocopied and attested. “We have tied up with a local corporator who attests students’ certificates in the shop itself,” said the owner of a shop outside Ramnarain Ruia College, Matunga.

Board secretary RR Bhise said: “Announcing the results early helped a lot of students think about their career choices before the admission process kicks off.”
