It has been a bittersweet year for the state’s Std X students — while the overall success rate fell by a worrying 6%, the number of those scoring 90% and more shot through the roof. Thankfully, however, junior college cut-offs are expected to rise by only 2-3% compared to last year, according to principals, and there will be no Delhi-like situation where the first list closed at 100% in one college.

TA Shiware, principal of Hinduja college, said, “There will definitely be a rise of 2-3% in the first merit list considering the good results of Std X students this year. But they need not worry about a Delhi repeat as we have several reputed colleges in the city, where all the top scorers can be accommodated. However, students who have scored between 80% and 85% will be in a tough spot and will find it difficult to get admission into top colleges.”

Kirti Narain, principal of Jai Hind College, said, “We are anticipating a 2% rise in the first merit list cut-off. However, the second merit list will come as a relief to many students after the top scorers have been allotted seats. We are anticipating that there will be more lists this time to accommodate the remaining students.”

Narain echoed Shiware’s opinion about there being no 100% cut-offs in the city. “The first merit list will certainly have high cut-offs, but it will not reach a level where the list will end at a 100% score.”

Shiware added, “That said, the first merit lists are likely have over 90% cut-offs. For courses like Science, I am anticipating that reputed colleges might have a cut-off close to 95%.”

Fr Frazer Mascarenhas, principal, St Xavier’s college, said, “Last year, we had a 90% cut-off. We will have to see what it will be this year.”

While cut-offs of traditional Arts, Science and Commerce courses will be high, those for bifocal science courses will be even higher.

“Thanks to the best-five system, there are many high scorers this year. Students interested in taking Science have a preference for bifocal courses, namely — computer science, electronics etc. Though the first lists will have super-high cut-offs, they will fall gradually in subsequent lists,” said MB Kenkare, principal of Patkar College.

However, he too endorsed the view that students need not panic about 100% cut-offs. “Most high scorers will be going for bifocal courses, after which the option for traditional Science courses still remains, and these offer similar career opportunities.”
