NDA parade: Pune’s Nikhil Prabhune wins president’s gold medal

Pune’s Nikhil Prabhune won the coveted president’s gold medal at the passing out parade of the 120th course of the National Defence Academy (NDA) on Tuesday morning.

With this, the young man from Lohegaon in Pune has won both the two top awards at the academy on two consecutive days. Nikhil was adjudged academic topper on Monday.

The other notable achievement was by bronze medalist Kishor Kunal, who was adjudged science topper on Monday. Shashank Singh won the silver medal.

The impressive passing out parade on Tuesday saw a total of 362 cadets pass out from the academy including 21 cadets from friendly foreign nations like Maldives, Bhutan and Tajikistan.

Speaking to DNA after the parade, Academy Cadet Adjutant Nikhil, who is an alumnus of the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) Dehradun said that the training he had received at the residential military school had moulded him. “My five years at RIMC prepared me very well for the NDA,’’ Nikhil said.

He however said he was indebted to NDA for providing him with the opportunity for all round growth. Nikhil, who is joining the Indian Navy wants to become a naval aviator.

Likewise, Kishor Kunal, a former student of the Sainik School, Purulia thanked his military school for grooming him for the NDA. “The years spent in the sainik school prepared me completely for the rigours of the NDA,’’ Kunal said. Kunal who will join the army wants to become a Gorkha Rifles officer.

Earlier in the day, Admiral Nirmal Verma, chief of the naval staff who reviewed the passing out parade in his address to the cadets said that the overall security scenario in India’s neighbourhood was uncertain. He asked them to be prepared to handle everything from a low intensity conflict to combat in a nuclear scenario.

In a four point advice to the cadets, the naval chief told the cadets to put service before self, continuously enhance professional competence, be brave and foster teamwork.

The passing out parade concluded with an exciting solo air display in a Sukhoi30 MKI fighter jet by Wing Commander Ashutosh Srivastav and a daring display of
aerobatics by the Sarang helicopter team.
