Bangalore-based IT professional-turned-fitness specialist, Anushree Kundra (39), surrendered before the Pune police, a month after allegedly murdering her ex-boyfriend's fiance, Juhi Prasad, at his rented flat in Pune's Salunke Vihar area.

While Juhi (26) died of 90% burns in a city hospital on October 22, Anushree's ex-boyfriend, Nimesh Sinha (27) suffered 10% burns.

On Tuesday morning Anushree, along with her father and uncle, approached the Cantonment court of judicial magistrate (first class), JA Kotnis, and surrendered. She was charged with murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code and remanded in police custody till November 21.

Anushree, who was crying in the court, had covered her face with a black scarf and wore a helmet when she approached the court after landing in Pune on Tuesday.

On Thursday, Anushree had obtained a four-day anticipatory bail from the Delhi high court.

According to the police, Nimesh had called Anushree and Juhi to his flat on October 12 to sort things out. The police have stated that it was early morning on October 13 that Anushree allegedly purchased petrol from a neighbouring fuel station, returned to the flat and set Juhi and Nimesh on fire, before fleeing the city.

Anushree's lawyers, Vaibhav Jathar and Tejraj Dafle, submitted a 12-page application before the court stating that she had been falsely implicated in the case.

The application said that in the wee hours of October 13, Nimesh and Juhi were drunk and had heated arguments with each other and it was then that Nimesh set Juhi on fire and even tried to burn Anushree, but she fled.

Assistant public prosecutor BR Patil strongly argued for 10 days police custody for Anushree, stating that the nature of the crime "is heinous and inhuman".

He said that not only had the suspect absconded from the day of the offence, but the nature of the crime was such that there were chances of another person involved in it. After the crime, Anushree had visited Mumbai, Delhi, Patna and other places, and the police would have to travel along with her to collect evidence.

The defence lawyers argued that Anushree did not abscond, but was trying to save her own life, and that she had voluntarily appeared before the court.

Her defence counsel accused Nimesh of the crime. Anushree had previously worked in Pune as a customer care executive at two health and fitness firms. Juhi was Nimesh's family friend and the two were soon to be married. A commerce graduate originally from Patna, Nimesh was working in a city-based fianance company. His mother and sister have confessed to the police that Anushree and Nimesh had a live-in relationship for 5 years. Anushree was sponsoring Nimesh's father's cancer treatment, according to the police.
