With the state election commissioner, Neela Satyanarayan, declaring February 16 as the date of elections to 10 municipal corporations, including Pune, the code of conduct came into effect on Tuesday afternoon.

Members of political parties had assumed that the code of conduct would come into effect on Wednesday and, therefore, most parties had organised a series of inaugurations on Tuesday. However, they sensed that the state election commission would declare the election date on Tuesday afternoon and they had to rush for the inaugurations before the code of conduct came into effect.

The iconic Phulrani toy train in Peshwe Park was to be inaugurated by Bharatiya Janata Party  (BJP) MLA Girish Bapat on Tuesday morning. Since the inauguration was done in a hurry before the code of conduct came into effect, the train could not undergo a trial run.

When the train was run on Tuesday, it got stuck under the bridge. The authorities had to cut a portion of the bridge to
allow the train through.

After the announcement of the election date, mayor Mohansingh Rajpal, deputy mayor Prasanna Jagtap, standing committee chairman Ganesh Bidkar and other leaders had to submit their vehicles to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

The PMC officials said two vehicles of the mayor and two of chairman of standing committee had been taken back. The deputy mayor and chairman of education board submitted their vehicles on Tuesday morning. By Tuesday night, 20 vehicles were
returned to the PMC.

These vehicles will remain parked at the PMC building and the PMC’s vehicle depot in Gultekdi till the code of conduct is over.
