The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a major anti-encroachment drive on Friday, freeing around 56 acres of land in Mundhwa. The plot is reserved for rehabilitating cattle sheds in the city.

PMC land acquisition department head, Sudhakar Telang, told media persons that the operation was a major one and the PMC freed the entire land within a day. The encroachers included slum dwellers, who built huts on the plots.

Some of the encroachers, posing as real estate agents, had subdivided the land into plots and sold them to third parties with the help of forged documents.

As the cattle sheds have become a headache for the city, the PMC has decided to relocate them to this plot. The PMC health department will carry out the work of rehabilitation of the cattle sheds.

The PMC had tried to take action against the encroachers previously, but there was opposition from the encroachers.
Telang said the PMC organised four meetings with the police and drew a detailed plan for the drive.

The PMC demolished all the huts and other encroachments on the plot with the help of four excavators. A strong police presence, led by assistant police inspector Devidas Patil, prevented any opposition from the encroachers.

The PMC is now planning to fence the plot to avoid any more problems.

Telang said the department will continue the anti-encroachment drive and free all PMC-owned buildings and plots. His department is making a list of complexes erected by using corporators’ and MLAs’ development funds.
