To honour cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar for his phenomenal performance in the Cricket World Cup 2011, Mumbai University’s senate members want to award him an honorary doctorate.

Since in the past, he has shown reluctance to accept such honours, university officials are planning to meet Tendulkar to convince him. Recently, Sachin was conferred an honorary doctorate by the University of Mysore at its annual convocation to be held on April 10. But his wife wrote a letter to the university vice-chancellor saying that her husband did not want to accept a doctorate while he was playing cricket.

According to university sources, the Yashwantrao Chavan Maharshtra Open University (YCMOU) also attempted to offer an honorary degree to Sachin two years ago. Then too, he had rejected the proposal.

On Sunday, the Jharkhand government said they will be conferring an honorary doctorate on local lad and Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who is yet to complete his graduation, but who led his team to a fantastic world cup victory in Mumbai.
Dilip Karande, a senate member from Mumbai University said, “Not only have we taken signatures from maximum senate members, the senate member who has been elected from the graduate constituency will submit a letter to Mumbai University authorities on Tuesday asking them to give a honorary doctorate to Sachin. I know everybody will agree to this decision.”

“Looking at Sachin’s performance and his greatness in the game, he should have received a doctorate much earlier. But this is a good occasion to give him a doctorate. We have raised this demand with the vice-chancellor,” said Sudhakar Tamboli, senate member of Mumbai University.

“Due to his tight schedule touring the world playing cricket, Sachin has not been able to complete his graduation,” a senior official from the university said. “It will be a matter of pride for us. Since he stays in the jurisdiction of Mumbai University, we will soon contact him personally and convince him to accept the doctorate. He deserves it as he has spent more than 20 years playing great cricket,” he added.
