Over 50,000 of 1,99,132  students who applied for online admissions to First Year Junior Colleges (FYJC) in the city, are waiting for the third and most probably final merit list with bated breath. This merit list could be the only chance these students have of securing a seat in the online admission process.

While the online admission process draws to a close, with the last of the scheduled lists being announced, several students have not made it to any of the merit lists declared. If these students are not allocated seats  in this round, they will have to try for offline admissions on their own.

“We will ensure that every student gets a seat in the next round. This could be the last list if most of the students secure seats. We will only declare a fourth general merit list if there are more than 400 students who have not secured admission,’’ said a senior education official.

However, many students who have scored below 80%, are still struggling to secure a seat. Abhishek Jadhav, says he has not secured a seat in the college of his choice despite scoring 88.75%.”I want to pursue science and aspire to study bachelors in biomedicine, unfortunately even an 80% does not suffice.’’ He said his preferences are Birla College, DG Ruparel or Sathaye College.

Ten boys who had secured admission in the arts section of Burhani College, which only had a girls only quota, due to an online error, have been left in the lurch. But the education officials have promised that they will allocate these students in good colleges offline.

Meanwhile, colleges claim to have sufficient number of seats for students to absorb the remaining students. In KPB Hinduja College, Charni Road, nearly 421 commerce seats out of the 11, 020 seats are lying vacant. While in Sathaye College, Vile Parle one of the most sought after college, 173 science, at DG Ruparel College 56 seats, at Mithibai College around 46 seats, at Ruia College around 30 seats, at SIES College 19 seats, are vacant.

“These students might have already secured admission in a college of their choice through offline admissions and so might not have taken admission. The provisional admission process does not give us a clear picture of the final number of seats,’’ said TA Shiware, principal, KPB Hinduja College.
