One of the smallest yet most difficult projects as far as alignment is concerned — the Milan rail over bridge (RoB) — will soon enter the most challenging part of its construction. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has called for tenders for construction of a 61m unsupported steel girder that will connect the flyover above the railway lines at Milan Subway in Santa Cruz (East).

If the officials of the metropolitan authorities are to be believed, this RoB will be the longest in the city. “The total length of the RoB will be 61m — which is approximately 200 feet. Recently, we have successfully completed the construction of a 36m (110 feet) RoB at Dahisar. I am confident of receiving a good response to this RoB girder as well, since this will be the longest in the city,” said SR Nandargikar, chief engineer, MMRDA.

Nandargikar also said that this bridge will not have any support within the railway premises. The cost of the steel girder construction is approximately Rs33 crore. The last date for receiving the tenders is August 27. “The tender will be opened on the same day. We are expecting a good response to it since many experienced infrastructure companies have shown keen interest in constructing the RoB,” Nandargikar told DNA.

The actual construction of the RoB is expected to begin by October this year. “We are confident of completing the entire project by March next year. Work will be carried out simultaneously on both sides of the railway line. The 800m flyover will meet the Western Express Highway (WEH) service road easing the traffic coming from the east to the west. I am sure this will bring in a lot of relief to the motorists during the coming monsoon,” added Nandargikar.
