This Independence Day, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) will not only be lit up on the outside, but it will also glow inside.

In July, commuters at CST have been pleasantly surprised to find the suburban concourse lit up by white, dome-shaped lights.

The Central Railway (CR) , which maintains stations on the main and harbour lines, is improving illumination on platforms, concourses and foot overbridges (FOBs) at three major stations — CST, Kurla and Dadar.

“Work on changing the light bulbs to refractor-type, 250-watt highbay metal halide lights at CST had begun in June. We are rectifying as well as replacing bulbs. We are also fixing new ones, where necessary. We expect to finish the work before August 15,” said a CR official.

Currently, there are 322 lights on both suburban and outstation sections at CST, Mumbai’s only railway terminus listed as a world heritage site by the Unesco. The suburban section had 40 lights and 16 were added. Two more are expected to be added.

“The lights are much brighter on the concourse. Initially, the lights were dim, but the new ones are quite striking,” said Usha Nair, who travels to CST every day.

A railway board's order in 2007 mandates improving the lux level of the lights installed on platforms and FOBs. “The lux level — intensity of illumination —  has been specified for each place on the railway premises for stations belonging to different categories. CST falls under A1 category so refractor-type, 250-watt highbay metal halide lights are being used,” said another CR official.

“The new lights will benefit more than 30 lakh commuters who use the terminus every day”" said Anil Kumar Singh, CR spokesperson.
