The father of a three-year-old child, who was paralysed, allegedly after a surgery to correct a heart ailment, has threatened to kill himself if his complaint of medical negligence against the hospital is not reconsidered again.

Worli resident Vijay Londhe has written to the state chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, asking for justice in the two-year-old case. He said that if he does not get justice by January 26, he will commit suicide.

“After the surgery, his body below the waist was totally paralysed and lost bladder control. Somebody has to attend to him all the time,” said Londhe. The child’s mother Vinita said, “I used to work, but had to leave the job to take care of our son.”

After the surgery, the family had filed a complaint at Santacruz police station against the hospital. When they approached JJ Hospital, they were told that there was no negligence in the case. “Our son was alright before the surgery. He could move his legs. He lost sensation in the legs after the surgery,” said Vijay.

Londhe earns his livelihood by selling agarbattis door-to-door. He has spent Rs15,000 to take care of his paraplegic son. Apart from Sankalp, the couple have two more children. “It is very difficult to take care of them after spending so much on the child’s medical care.” said Londhe.

“The JJ Hospital certificate mentions that the cause of the condition is Postoperative Ischemic complete paraplegia. We also consulted the All India Institute of Physical Handicapped and Rehabilitation at Haji Ali and after the treatment, they also gave the same opinion,” added Londhe.

When contacted, Sankalp cardiac surgeon Dr Ashok Hishikar, who operated on the child two-and-half years ago, said, “The Sir JJ Hospital board also examined the case and found nothing wrong. We did everything we could to save the child’s life.”
