A city doctor has been selected to take part in a world cup  for the best innovations in the field of endoscopy.

Dr Amit Maydeo, who is attached to Breach Candy Hospital, has been chosen to show his new technique in the field at the first World Cup of Endoscopy organised by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (AGSE). Maydeo is among the 11 doctors from across the world who will be presenting their innovations.

Maydeo will give a presentation to over 15,000 gastroenterologists from across the world at the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago on May 10.

Two months ago, Maydeo submitted his video to the ASGE in which he described a new technique called spyglass pancreatoscopy-guided cannulation and retrieval of a deeply migrated pancreatic duct stent.

According to Maydeo, during chronic pancreatitis, there is a long-standing inflammation of the pancreas causing narrowing of the duct and pain gastroenterologists put a stent in the pancreas to correct the problem, but sometimes the stent can get dislocated and goes into the duct. The removal of the stent is difficult through endoscopy and patients have to undergo surgery. “But with the help of spyglass, we can remove the stent using an endoscope without surgery,” said Maydeo.

After the presentations, the panel of international judges will declare the winners.
