Sells Tagore Nagar redevelopment plan to another builder though the colony belongs to Mhada.

Taking a cue from the protagonists of the film Bunty Aur Babli, who sold the Taj Mahal to a foreigner for millions, a private developer has signed an “agreement” with another builder to hand over the redevelopment plan of Tagore Nagar Housing Society.

But there’s a hitch: Though the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada) which owns the 2.5 lakh sq mt housing colony in Vikhroli, has approved the redevelopment proposal last year, no developer has been selected yet.

In March 2009, Godrej Projects Development signed a memorandum of understanding with Star Vision Megacity to hand over the Tagore Nagar “property”. In February 2010, Star Vision Megacity called for tenders for the redevelopment project. Das has a copy of the agreement that Star Vision Megacity signed with Samir Mehta and Associates selling them the development rights of Tagore Nagar colony.

“I have a set of documents which indicate a huge fraud carried out by these developers,” said Allwyn Das, former member of Mhada Mumbai board. “This colony houses lower middle-class residents. Unfortunately land sharks have been misguiding them with false promises,” he added.

“The chief officer of the Mumbai board on the instructions of Mhada vice-president has sent show-cause notices to Godrej Projects Development and Star Vision Megacity. The administration will take action against the developers,” said Mhada Mumbai Board chairman Amarjit Singh Manhas.

DNA has copies of two show-cause notices sent to the two firms in July asking them to immediately stop “illegally using the names of the CEO and the Mhada Mumbai Board”.

Many housing societies in Tagore Nagar have also written protest letters to Mhada asking them not to consider the two firms as their developer.

Sanjay Dhavan, one of the directors of Star Vision Mega City, refused to comment on the show-cause notice. Godrej Projects Development’s managing director Milind Korde was not available for comment.
