A gang of four robbers has been arrested by the officers of the Mumbai Crime Branch on Monday. The gang has been instrumental in cases of robberies, thefts and murder in the city.

The arrested quartet has been identified as Ramzan Shaikh, 23, Raju Telugu, 18, Aakash Malvi, 20 — all residents of Indira Nagar slums in Sewri — and Ramesh Bhutkar, 22, a resident of Ghatkopar.

“The arrested gang members have criminal records and were instrumental in several criminal cases, including murder,” said deputy commissioner of police, detection, Nisar Tamboli. “While one of the gang members Changu had recently died after falling off a running train, two other members — Ganesh and Dinesh Bhutkar — are still at large,” he added.

According to Tamboli, on receipt of specific information that a gang, specialising in robberies, would be near Gajanan Colony in Goregaon (West) around 7pm, a trap was laid by inspectors, Raghunath Dalvi, Mahesh Tawre, Chimaji Adav, Sanjeev Gawde and Allhad Gaikwad.

On searching them, the police recovered one .32 bore factory-made pistol, two live cartridges, one chopper, two knives and other materials used to commit the thefts and robberies.

They were produced before a local court and all have been remanded in police custody till April 11, the police said.
