The Mumbai police have claimed that the group involved in last Wednesday’s triple blasts could be the same one which executed the firing outside Delhi’s Jama Masjid in September last year.

Though a sketch of one of the suspects has been prepared with the help of CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts, the police are not sharing it with other agencies as it is confident of nabbing him on its own.

On September 19 last year, two unknown men on a motorcycle had opened fire on a stationary bus near the mosque. There were six Taiwani nationals in the vehicle, of whom two had sustained bullet injuries. The incident had occurred just a few days before the Commonwealth Games.

A threat email allegedly sent by the Indian Mujahideen (IM) claiming the responsibility was received soon after. The email was traced to Malad, but the police have failed to make any headway in the case and it remains unsolved.

“We cannot rule out the possibility of the same module’s involvement in these (Mumbai) blasts,” said a senior police officer, hinting that the police are still investigating IM’s involvement.
The police are also reluctant to share the sketch of one of the suspects in the blast at Zaveri Bazaar. The police have restricted circulation of the sketch among other agencies.

“The sketch has been given to the core investigation team of the Anti-Terrorism Squad and the crime branch. We have not shared it with the state police and other agencies. We will be sharing the sketch with them as and when the need arises,” the officer said.
The police are sure that they will be able to trace and nab this person.

“This is also the reason we are not making the sketch public. We will be visiting prisons across the country where terrorists have been lodged and will show the sketch to them. To this end, we are activating our prison sources for clues about the blasts,” the officer said.

The officer added that even in the Afzal Usmani case, the police were using the same process.

“Not only Usmani’s brother [who died soon after an interrogation], we have also questioned several others who used to meet Usmani in Sabarmati jail. The reason is that there is always a possibility that messages could have been sent by him or passed on to him through those who were meeting him regularly,” the officer said.
