Oblivious to her surroundings, two-year-old Soni Mangeshwar is busy smiling for the shutterbugs perched on her neighbour’s arm outside KEM Hospital’s morgue. Her father Mangeshwar Vishwakarma, 30, who was injured in the 13/7 Dadar blast, succumbed to his injuries at 8.30am on Monday.

With his death, the death toll in the serial blasts that hit Mumbai on July 13 has risen to 24.Vishwakarma, a carpenter by profession, had been battling for his life after being severely injured in the blast.

According to doctors at KEM, Vishwakarma had sustained critical head injuries when a bomb exploded near the Dadar Kaburtarkhana area on July 13. He underwent a complex brain surgery and had even regained consciousness. However, he had been put on a ventilator since Saturday.

“We were desperately praying for Mangeshwar’s speedy recovery,” his wife Rinku said. She had stayed put outside the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) with her neighbours ever since Mangeshwar was admitted.

Meanwhile, Mangeshwar’s neighbours have been a constant source of support to his bereaved wife and daughter. His landlady Vidya Keni was seen busy tending to hospital formalities and consoling Rinku, while other neighbours where taking care of Soni.

“Mangeshwar had a strained relationship with his parents and other relatives. They were living alone. It is a testament to the family’s goodness that all their neighbours and Mangeshwar’s colleagues have stepped up to help them,” said Vidya.

After the blast, her neighbours have helped Rinku get her own PAN card and opened a bank account so that she could deposit the Rs2 lakh compensation received from the government.

However, with the sole earning member of the family gone, Rinku is now concerned about her future and that of her daughter.

Mangeshwar and Rinku both originally hail from Uttar Pradesh and had come to Mumbai four years ago. The family lives in a rented house in Sion Koliwada. After getting a furniture contract in Dadar, Mangeshwar had gone to Dadar market the day of the blast to place an order for plywood.
