Vasai resident Mayur Tambe, discharged on Friday from KEM Hospital’s ENT ward, is set to play his much-awaited volleyball match.

A member of the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA), Mayur’s team is playing at Dadar ground tonight. “I have not practiced for the past three days, but I am sure my team is going to win,” he said.

“Mayur has to undergo few audiometric tests after 3 weeks. But otherwise, he is fine,” said an ENT specialist at KEM hospital, which is incidentally where Mayur works as a sweeper.

Despite a demanding work schedule, Mayur manages to spare a few hours every week for volleyball practice, a passion since his childhood. He was on his way to a night shift on Wednesday. He said, “I left early that day as I wanted to buy a pair of shorts from Dadar market. I heard the thud and soon I was engulfed in smoke. I lost all my senses. I still don’t know how I got up and reached the hospital on my own.”

Mayur lost his hearing that night. “His ear membrane is intact but the nerves in the ears are damaged. It is too early to say whether he will fully recover. We will examine him after 3 weeks,” said his doctor.

Mayur is the only hope for his widowed mother who works as a masseuse. Mayur, who studied till Std 10, got engaged in April this year and is set to marry in a year or two.
