The Versova police have arrested a 32-year-old woman for cheating men by luring them with marriage proposals  and then fleeing with valuables and cash after getting an opportunity.

According to the police, Neetu Matkar approached her targets by going through the matrimonial advertisements in newspapers and matrimonial sites.

As per the complaint filed with the Versova police,  Matkar approached the complainant on July 14 after she read an advertisement for marriage proposal in a newspaper. The complainant, a businessman from the suburb, was planning to remarry after separation from his first wife.

The officials said the duo started going together after  talking to each other over the phone and also planned to get married after some months.

The officials added that the accused made the businessman spend on her shopping and recently when they were alone at the victim’s flat, she ‘hypnotized’ him and fled with cash of around Rs 35,000.

The accused who surprisingly  realized only three days later that he has been cheated, then lodged a complaint with the Versova police station against the woman.

On the basis of the cell phone records of the calls made by the accused, the police managed to arrest the woman from Mira Road. She was charged with cheating and robbery under various  sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The preliminary investigation has revealed that the accused had played similar trick with others as well.

“But no case has been registered in most of the cases, except at the neighbouring DN Nagar police station,” said a senior police official.

The police are now trying to trace other victims, so that a stronger case can be made out against her.
