Monsoon advances across India

IMD's deputy director general (weather forecasting), AB Mazumdar said that strong westerly winds from the Arabian Sea had increased humidity in the Mumbai-Pune region and across Maharashtra.

The southwest monsoon, which arrived in Kerala on Sunday, has advanced to some more parts to the south of Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of Andaman Sea and parts of east central Bay of Bengal.

According to the Monday evening bulletin of the India meteorological department (IMD), conditions are now favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over some more parts of Arabian Sea, remaining parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, central and south Bay of Bengal and some parts of Karnataka over the next two to three days.

Speaking to DNA on Monday, IMD’s deputy director general (weather forecasting), AB Mazumdar said that strong westerly winds from the Arabian Sea had increased humidity in the Mumbai-Pune region and across Maharashtra. “This can result in thundershowers in parts of Maharashtra in the next two days,” Mazumdar said.

The main weather observations recorded in the last 24 hours showed that widespread rainfall occurred over Lakshadweep and Kerala, fairly widespread over western Himalayan region, northeastern states, sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, scattered over Karnataka, Punjab, Haryana and isolated over Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, north Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
