In what may be the first example in the country, the education board of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to exercise online control over the implementation of midday meal project in its schools.

The midday meal scheme is a state government initiative implemented in 296 schools in the city. The meals are prepared and served by members of the self-help groups (SHG) to more than two lakh students.

A major complaint of SHGs was non-payment of bills by the board, while the school board blamed them for late submission of bills. To tide over these problems, the board made the process of bill submission and verification online through its website www.mdmpmcpune.com.

The online submission of bills will be possible thanks to a special software developed by C-Soft IT Solutions.

Seema Rangade, superintendent of midday meal scheme, said each school will be given a unique code, which will act as their login for the software. Between the 1st and 7th of every month, the schools will have to submit their bills with details of the number of days the meals were served, the amount of rice given to  SHGs and the number of students were served meals.

“The software has been designed in such a manner that correction in submitted bills will not be allowed. In order to ensure timely submission of bills, the software will not allow any submission of bills after the 7th of every month,’’ she said.

For submission of bills, nodal schools will be connected via the Internet. For every 10 schools, a nodal school would be selected, where the principals will submit their bills online. Already the work of providing an Internet connection at the nodal schools is over and the dummy software has been uploaded on the
website.

The training of the principals will start from April 11 and the project will start in a full-fledged manner from the next academic year.
