In a bizarre incident, a 35-year-old man died when a bogus cop threw him out of a running bus. The accused, who was later identified as Thane resident Raju Devlekar, 34, has been arrested.

The incident occurred at Upvan in Thane on Thursday evening. The victim, Arvindkumar Bharti, hailed from Uttar Pradesh and had come to Thane in search of a job. He was staying with a relative.

On Thursday, Bharti along with his relative Monu Chowdhari, a resident of Gandhinagar in Nalpada area of the city, was sitting by the Upvan Lake when the accused arrived there.

He introduced himself as a policeman and asked them why they were sitting there.

He then demanded money saying otherwise he would drag them to the police station. When they tried to explain that they were just relaxing, Devlekar started thrashing them.

Scared, Bharti and Chowdhari left the spot and boarded a Thane Municipal Transport bus. But, Devlekar followed them into the bus and continued thrashing them. Before other commuters could interfere, he pushed Bharti out of the running bus.

A grievously injured Bharti was first admitted to a local hospital but later shifted to the Sion hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Chowdhari and other passengers nabbed Devlekar and handed him over to the police. Devlekar was produced in court which remanded him in police custody till September 26. Senior police inspector Nivruti Kakad of Vartaknagar police station is investigating if the accused has committed similar offences.
