A 28-year-old man, who was allegedly riding his bike at over 100 kmph after consuming alcohol, met with an accident at Powai in the wee hours on Saturday. However, his body could only be found fifteen hours later.

The deceased, Kareem Shaikh, a resident of Kamraj Nagar in Ghatkopar, was returning home with a female companion, also of the same age, from Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road. Powai police said Shaikh was speeding at over 100 km per hour when he hit the divider on the flyover on Adi Shankaracharya Marg in Powai.

The impact was so huge that the bike skidded 30 metres away.
A senior police officer said, “The accident took place between 4 and 5 am. Shaikh and his friend had consumed a high amount of alcohol. It could be due to this that he lost control and rammed into the divider.”

A few passers-by spotted the unconscious female pillion rider at around 5 am and rushed her to nearby LH Hiranandani Hospital and also informed the Powai police. They assumed that the rider had run off after the accident, and thus did not look for him. The police team which reached the spot soon after, found the bike, but could not see Shaikh anywhere and assumed the same.

Later in the morning, when Shaikh’s family members learnt that the female, whom they knew, had been hospitalised, they started looking for him and approached the police. Senior police inspector Ashok Jadhav from the Powai police station said, “Shaikh’s family members told us that he was riding the bike which was found at the spot, but had not returned home. We sent a team to search for Shaikh, but could not find him despite looking near the spot. The search went on through the day. Late the evening, a shoe was spotted about thirty feet from the bike near the divider. It was then that we spotted Shaikh’s body inside the gap in the under-construction divider. No one had spotted the body as it is a busy road and the gap is deep”.

The woman is reported to be out of danger. The police had initially recorded the incident as an accidental death, but later registered a case of rash and negligent driving, and drunk driving, against Shaikh.
