A 42-year-old man was arrested for emptying the bank account of an illiterate man after offering to help him in withdrawing cash from an ATM. The conman withdrew money by using victim’s confidential code number soon after the victim left the

The police said Satyendra Mishra, a resident of Bhiwandi, was booked for forgery and cheating. He was earlier arrested by the Colaba, Pydhonie and VP Road police in similar offences, the police said.
Narrating the incident, Lavkush Yadav (27), said: “ I went to SBI’s ATM centre at Pandita Ramabai Road just opposite Gamdevi police station on October 7 night to check balance in my account. I don’t to know how to use the ATM card. Mishra met me just
outside ATM centre and politely told me that he will check the balance. After asking confidential code of my ATM card, he swiped the card and handed me over the receipts which showed the balance as Rs14,970. But after couple of days when I went to check the my balance with a friend, I was shocked to find only Rs70 in my account. Rs14,000 was withdrawn by Mishra on October 7 night.”
“After receiving a complaint, we have collected CCTV footages and laid a trap at 13 ATM centres located in Gamdevi area and succeeded in nabbing Mishra. Interestingly, Yadav identified Mishra who helped him to check his bank balance at ATM centre on October 7,” said inspector Avinash Kanade.
During interrogation, Mishra admitted that he had duped one Surekha Shigwan, 46, a maid servant by withdrawing Rs11,700 from her account. Mishra also duped one Manish Medar, 25, by withdrawing Rs20,000 by using Medar’s confidential password from an ATM centre on August 23 night.
